Reasons Why Headhunter Don’t Return Your Calls

You’ve probably heard of this lucky scenario: a working professional is doing his job when he contacts the hirer for a great opportunity. Sometimes this leads to hiring — just like that, to a new job without looking for a job. At the very least, professionals hear market news, get real-time snapshots of their market value, and gain more confidence that recruiters will contact. Did this happen to you? Did the recruiter call you? If you don’t get this opportunistic call, there are seven possible reasons:

You are invisible online.

Most candidate research is done online via social media, especially LinkedIn. In most recruiting business, people search LinkedIn for keywords that reflect a certain type of skill, company, or experience. Will your profile appear when recruiters search? Does your online profile fully reflect your skills and experience? Do not assume that it is a well-written resume as you may not be targeted and you may even have the opportunity to submit a resume.

You are not active online.

Sometimes you hear from a candidate, but not much except the name, and you will check LinkedIn for more details… only to find an empty account with a link. Not only do you have no information to help me move forward, but you also have no way of contacting you even if you wanted to — the fact that you have few connections means that you are inactive and may not respond to messages you will react to. Some recruiters may even take your inaction as a sign that you are not up to date on social media and therefore generally not up to date.

Your role doesn’t match the obvious keywords.

It’s true that some candidates find it easier to lead passively than others. If your role uses certain skills (e.g., programming in a particular language) or can be described very specifically (e.g., fundraising) then keywords will more easily lead you to you. If your role is in general management or strategy or something more general, it’s harder to go wrong when searching for keywords. However, you can increase your chances by placing the right keywords. Your title may be general (e.g., Marketing Manager), but your role description may include specific types of marketing (e.g., digital/online, direct mail, customer segmentation) that can be searched.
